Body temperature often drops unintentionally after mechanical thrombectomy. Whether this protects or harms patients was unclear.

The Göttingen study led by Prof. Ilko Maier analysed 480 patients who underwent thrombectomy for large vessel occlusion between 2015 and 2021. About one fifth (19.4%) were hypothermic after the procedure (below 35 °C). Hypothermia was an independent predictor of unfavourable functional outcome at 90 days.

The authors consider a prospective trial of active warming during thrombectomy warranted.
